3 Steps to Avoid Blockages

Three simple ways to reduce drain blockages, plus what to do when a blockage occurs.

3 Steps to Avoid Blockages

1. Bin Fats, Oils & Grease

Fats, oils & grease can build up over time, creating thick sticky traps for any other waste that incorrectly finds its way down the pipes. They are a leading cause of kitchen drain blockages. Make sure when you are disposing of them, they go in the bin and not down the kitchen sink!

2. If it Didn’t Come From You, Don’t Flush It

Toiletry wipes, paper towels, dental floss, sanitary and contraceptive items are major culprits in the bathroom blockage game, with number one being hair. Don’t let your hair go down the drain — it’s a fishing net for build-up and blockages.

3. The Root Cause

Tree roots are incredibly strong. The rule of thumb is that if the canopy lines up with any water or drainage lines, chances are the roots are tapping into your water supply too. Watch what you plant and maintain what’s existing in your yard and garden.

What Do I Do if I Suspect I Have a Blockage?

  • Identify the issue
  • Clear out any stagnant water and remove any visible blockages
  • Attempt to unclog the blockage manually with drain cleaner and/or a plunger

Keep monitoring any cleared blockages; often a manual fix is only a partial solution. Triple Eight Plumbing can attend site to camera and hydro-jet any problem areas, assessing causes and solutions to stubborn blockages or damaged pipes.
